The dwarf thornless blackberry bush Rubus x ‘APF-236T’, tradename BabyCakes Blackberry was chosen by the judges of the Farwest Show 2016 in Portland, Oregon (US) for Best in Show honors. The Farwest Show started yesterday and doors are open until Saturday, August 27. There were 55 new trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals and vines on display at this year’s New Varieties Showcase. “Every year, this showcase offers nursery professionals a chance to see the best in new plants, and this year is no exception,” OAN Director of Events Allan Niemi said on Facebook. “This year offers one of our largest assortments of new plants.”
Fireworks-like spray of fruit
BabyCakes is described as a dwarf, thornless blackberry with showy, white spring flowers; lush green spring and summer foliage; and large and sweet summer blackberries that produce on the plant in a fireworks-like spray of fruit. It should be ideally suited for use in large, decorative patio pots, but can be grown in the garden space as well. “It prefers full sun, although in very hot regions some afternoon shade is recommended. Compact, rounded and upright habit reaches 3–4 feet tall and wide.”

From Spain, Italy to US
Hibiscus syriacus ‘Purple Pillar’, trade name Purple Pillar Rose of Sharon, which was discovered by Dutch grower Marinus Adrianus Cornelis van Aart and introduced to the North American market by Proven Winners Color Choice Flowering Shrubs. Actually Gandini Santiago selected ‘Pruple Pillar’ on a nursery in Spain and brought the variety with him to Italy. When Ad and Mario van Aart from Netherlands visited Santiago in Italy they saw the commercial potentials of ‘Purple Pillar’ and introduced it in 2013 to the European market [read more].
Last year a white version of ‘Purple Pillar’ won a Silver Medal at the 25th edition of the Dutch trade fair GrootGroen Plus 2015. This newcomer is named Hibiscus syriacus ‘Gandini van Aart’ (White Pillar).

Truered inflorescences
Lagerstroemia ‘PIILAG-IX’, First Editions Sunset Magic Crape Myrtle was bred by Jeff Beasley, Michael A. Dirr, Mark Griffith, Rhonda Helvick and Oren McBee in Watkinsville, Georgia, and introduced to the North American market by Bailey Nurseries Inc. “This compact beauty has large, almost truered inflorescences that cover the dark foliage when it flowers. Sunset Magic flowers more heavily than other reds with dark foliage. Deep, black-purple leaves are flatter, more lustrous and hold their dark color into late summer. Its intermediate size makes it desirable for widespread use as a specimen color shrub or in hedges or screens. Prefers hot, full-sun locations and well-drained soil. Sunset Magic is Cercospora resistant. Upright, fast growing habit reaches 5–10 feet tall and 4–8 feet wide.”
Exceptionally large red berries
Gaultheria procumbens ‘GaulSid5’, trade name Cherry Berries Wintergreen was Gurjit Sidhu from US based Sidhu & Sons Nursery, and introduced to the North American market by Briggs Nursery. About Wintergreen Griggs says: “Cherry Berries offers the most exceptionally large red berries you will find on a wintergreen. Bears fruit fall through spring. Its evergreen, glossy green foliage turns merlot-colored in the cool of winter. Use as a ground cover or as a cascading plant over hardscape features. Prefers part shade and acidic, humidic, well-drained soil. Low, spreading moderate grower reaches 8–10 inches tall and 3 feet wide.”
