The voting for this year’s Readers’ Choice Finalists of US trade magazine Greenhouse Growers is open. It’s up to the reader to decide which variety is picked as the best new introduction in 2017. Breeders and plant introducers have entered their best varieties by category and the winners have advanced as finalists to face off to win the Readers’ Choice award. The winner will be announced July 17 at Greenhouse Grower’s Evening of Excellence reception during Cultivate’17 in Columbus, Ohio (US).
In the Category ‘Best of the Rest/Edible’ Capsicum annuum Candy Cane Red from PanAmerican Seed is favorite. This sweet snack pepper from the Seed’s HandPicked Vegetable Collection by PanAmerican has uniquely variegated foliage and striking striped fruit that will stand out on the retail shelf, in the garden, and on the dining table. “Its elongated, bell-shaped fruit ripens from green and white stripes to solid red. Thin walls and crispy texture make it perfect for fresh eating at any stage of ripeness. It grows well in the ground or in a container, with or without a support cage. Candy Cane Red pepper matures green in 40 to 45 days and ripens to red in 60 to 65.”
