“There might be fewer foreign breeding companies, but they are bigger than the companies in Netherlands.” Dutch professor Richard Visser states this in an article which is published in the leading Dutch floricultural trade magazine Vakblad voor de Bloemisterij. Visser is Chair & Head Plant Breeding at the Wageningen University. According to him the bigger foreign breeders are technically better equipped for more advanced breeding. He also refers to the subsidized lily research in China and Korea. “I am wondering if we have to continue with that kind of research in Netherlands. We are getting far behind.” In his opinion marketing is essential for Dutch breeders. “Perhaps even more than the breeding itself.”
