Isotoma axillaris ‘Tmlu1301’ Fizz n’Pop Glowing Purple is described in a preview of the RHS Chelsea Plant of the Year Competition 2018 as the largest flowered Isotoma with the deepest unfading purple flowers to date. “Unlike all other Isotoma, it does not require any cold period to initiate flowering. It is heat and drought tolerant and provides five months of vibrant colour. The nectar-rich blooms are very attractive to pollinators, with plants flowering tirelessly from late Spring to frost, bringing intense colour impact to the garden.”
Fizz n’Pop Glowing Purple is bred by Chris Valin from UK based Thompson & Morgan.
The patent documents (Plant Patent granted in October 2017) refer to the 1990s, when an Istoma a seed breeding program was commenced in Ipswich, Essex, United Kingdom. However, from this program no cultivars were selected or introduced. In 2010, Thompson & Morgan started another breeding program to develop named cultivars of Isotoma with the objectives of large flower size and novel flower colors. Thompson & Morgans breeder Chris Valin was able to utilize seeds and seedlings from the previous seed breeding program.
‘TMLU 1301’ was first asexually propagated by Valin in 2013. This vegetative variety is distributed by Plantinova (Europe) and PlantHaven International (US). PlantHaven brings the new variety onto the North American market as Fizz n’Pop Glowing Violet.
The Chelsea Flower Show will be held May 22-26 in London.
