“The first scented middle large-flowered Clematis’ are being propagated and grown right now”, tells Dutch Clematis breeder Ton Hannink. “In many years breeders tried to cross-breed scent into middle large and large-flowered varieties. Until now these efforts led to nothing.”
Hannink based his breeding program on the very rare Clematis cadmia. “This species has not been outside China yet. Clematis specialists Grey Wilson and Magnus Johnson already pinpointed C. cadmia as very interesting. With these genetics I developed Clematis ‘Deligtful Scent’ and C. ‘Scented Clem’.”
The lilac flowers of these two new cultivars which belong to the strong and hardy viticella-group, are 6 to 8 and 8 to 10 cm.
Last year, the propagation started. Nursery Gebroeders Jonkers can already offer starting material. German grower Münster in Altenmoor has both cultivars in production now. Negotiations with a well-known Dutch climber specialist are according to Hannink well advanced.
