Cranberries in hanging containers

One of the novelties in Novelty Showcase of the last month held German trade fair IPM came from Austria. Nursery Steiner showed cranberries in hanging pots. Steiner grows them in containers with 20 and 28 cm in diameter. The plants are trailing and make easily shoots longer than 1 meter. They flower in May with delicate white-pink flowers. In autumn, when the berries have attained a dark red color, they can be harvested. From spring 2013 Steiner will supply ‘qualified’ garden centres with these hanging cranberries.
In general Steiner describes Vaccinium macrocarpon as a very special, ground covering plant. “Cranberries are evergreen and decorative, ideal for planting in window boxes, tubs and bowls, rock and heather gardens and slopes and wetlands on pond shores.”
