Jan Verschoor from family-run company A. Verschoor Horticulture Import/Export in Netherlands bred the new Phlox paniculata Bambini series. Bambinis are characterized by a compact and bushy habit, scented flowers, disease (mildew) tolerant and has large flower heads. Bambini will reach up to 20cm high.
First US, then Europe
European royalty management agency Plantipp highlighted the Bamibini series in its latest newsletter. However, it is Plantipps sister company Concept Plants which will launch the series first in the US. Europe follows soon after.
The series include now the varieites ‘Desire’ (introduction in 2016/2017) and ‘Candy Crush’ (introduction in 2017/2018). Jan Verschoor is working on new colours for the Bambini-series.
6 to 7 years to develop new series
It took around 6 to 7 years to develop this very compact Phlox paniculata series. Before A. Verschoor Horticulture Import/Export had compact types, which were backcrossings of Phlox paniculata to Phlox arendsii. “At first sight they looked good, but eventually it turned out that the varieties were too weak and the breeding process had to start over. But eventually Verschoor was able to achieve a magnificent species”, explains Plantipp in the newsletter.
“Phlox paniculata Bambini is very suitable as a potted plant for garden patios, for mass planting in urban green, and for the front of plant borders. It is an excellent fast-growing ground cover, which is also effective to suppress weed.”
