Astilbe ‘Chocolate Cherry’ from Dutch breeder Hans van der Meer is voted Best of Show at Plantarium 2016. This new variety in the Astilbe Mighty-series was submitted to the new plants competition of this Dutch trade fair for hardy nursery stock (August 24-27) by Dutch based Compass Plants.
The expert jury from the Royal Boskoop Horticultural Society felt that everything was right about this plant. “Perfect in shape, foliage and flower. Healthy dark green foliage. Brown-bronze young leaves. A unique, very attractive flower colour and dark peduncles”, praised the judges in their jury report. Compass Plants underscores that this entry has striking, large velvet-red flower spikes and red stems. The leaves are a chocolate-red colour, changing to dark green when the plant is in glorious full bloom. “The chocolate-red colour returns automatically once the plant has finished flowering. The plant reaches a height of around 100-110cm and flowers in June/July.”

As well as the best novelty, four other plants were also awarded gold medals by the jury. With regard to Hydrangea macrophylla ‘H213901’ (Curly Sparkle) by Dutch based Hydrangea Breeders Association and grower André van Zoest, the jury of the Royal Boskoop Horticultral Society commented: “Very distinct and unique in flower shape; well-grown in blue and red; handsome combination of green immature flowers and coloured mature flowers.” Curly Sparkle was entered into the new plants competition with the message that this new variety is available in both red and dark blue/purple. “The flowers are very strong and have a unique shape which is greatly appreciated by consumers. In the autumn, the novelty changes to several shades of autumn colours and is therefore extremely suitable as a terrace, patio and garden plant as well as a house plant.”

This Gold Medal winner was regarded by the jury as innovative in terms of vigour, combined with health, abundant flowering and an attractive flower colour. On&On White is charterized by Cultivaris as a perennial plant which surpasses all other Phlox varieties on the market. “The plant has a compact, bushy habit. The plants form an attractive mound with pure white flowers which have delicate fuchsia eyes. It flowers from April to November.” On&On White is recommended for use as a summer flowering plant in the border or in hanging baskets.

Florensis (Netherlands) entered the new Salvia into the new plants competition with the comments: “The large flower spikes are compact, have deep blue flowers and bloom all summer long. Deadheading encourages repeat flowering.” Plant Patent for ‘Blue Marvel’ was granted in 2014.
